Never heard of Chetola? It's the "crown jewel of the High Country" — a 75-acre resort on Lake Chetola at the apex of the Blue Ridge Parkway, steps from downtown Blowing Rock. Full-kitchen condo, heated pool, spa, trails, and Orvis-endorsed fly fishing on property.

Why this week? Late October is when the color cascades down to Blowing Rock's elevation, and the Linn Cove Viaduct-to-Moses Cone Parkway stretch — minutes away— is called the best foliage drive in eastern North America. Grandfather Mountain and Linville Falls are short hops.

Eat & drink: Fireside dinner at Timberlake's or cocktails at Headwater's on-site, then walk into town for The Speckled Trout or Twigs — or splurge at Gideon Ridge, a James Beard semifinalist with the best view in town (reservations recommended during leaf season).
