The season typically runs from mid-September through late October, with colors starting at higher elevations first and progressing downward.Colors often begin appearing in mid-September on mountain tops and northern/higher areas. Peak foliage in the Lincoln area (including Franconia Notch and the western end of the Kancamagus Highway) usually hits around the second week of October, often around Columbus Day weekend (mid-October). This is when the colors are at their most brilliant.

The season winds down by late October, with leaves falling and conditions moving to "past peak" by the end of the month.

Timing varies each year based on factors like weather (cool nights and sunny days produce the brightest colors), elevation, and latitude—higher spots peak earlier.
