Things To Do/General Tips

Dolphin Encounter - Hilton Waikoloa Village - A large Hilton hotel with boats and monorail to get to your room. They have a Dolpin Encounter where you or the kids are in the water with the dolphins and trainers. Of course, they video tape it for a "lifetime" memory.
Dolphin Quest
2/18/03
Landing at Kona airport - The Big Island has lots (and lots and lots) of lava fields. You land on one at the Kona airport. It's not too scenic (black stone) but don't worry soon after you leave the airport you start seeing the lush beautiful countryside. Also, Kona airport has no jetways.  5/30/99
The Big Island has a Costco- There is a Costco discount store on the Big Island. It is several miles North of Kailua-Kona. Turn onto Kamanu Street.
The Costco is a great place to gas up the car as their price is about 25% lower than all other stations on the island!

Mauna Kea Beach- Mauna Kea Beach is one of the most beautiful of all the Big Island Beaches. It is next to Hapuna Prince north of Kona above the Waikoloa area. Highly rated by the Travel Channel. 9/23/03
Hapuna Beach- It's about 30 miles North of Kailua-Kona. Great white sand beach for swimming. Our favorite BUT we didn't have time to explore that many.  5/30/99
A Bay -'Anaeho'omalu Bay- Near the Hilton Waikoloa. You can get to the parking lot by taking the 1st left on the entrance road to the Hilton and Bay Club (right across from the shops and is not marked). We were told that sometimes a guard will be at the gate and if the parking lot is full will turn you away. You should ask if you can check for a open spot.  5/30/99
White Sands/Magic Sands/Disappearing Sands- It's just before the 4 mile marker on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona. It's called Magic Sands / Disappearing Sands since during heavy surf, especially winter the sand retreats offshore. This leaves just a little or no sand on the "beach". Nice clean white sand when it's there, nice waves. It gets crowded but close to the Kailua-Kona timeshares. 5/30/99
Kahalu'u State Park - It's a popular and good snorkeling beach especially for beginners (you need to go out a bit from the beach). When we were there, the sand was rough on your feet on the shore and it was especially sharp for the 1st 25 feet after entering. We wished we had some protection for our feet. South on Alii Drive in Kailua (5 mile marker?)  5/30/99
