Hikes into the Halawa Valley
Hikes into the Halawa Valley are now permitted but must be done by a paid tour, as it crosses private land. Tours are done by residents or young relatives of the residents. If not on an official tour and discovered hikers will be asked to leave the valley. Tour arrangements are made at the outdoor activity desk at Hotel Molokai http://hotelmolokai.com The hike was expensive ($85 per person to the waterfall) but it was one of the highlights of our trip to Molokai. The hike is not hard but does include crossing over a river twice each way. Guide ropes are at the river for the first crossing, and the second crossing is more of a rock hop.

Island Kine Rentals - 4 wheel drive Rentals  We found 4 wheel drive vehicles through Island Kine Rentals. The rentals are done at a private home in "town" and included a map of the island which included hand noted stops on the island. (such as where to get a cold drink when driving, the best place to snorkel, etc.) They sometimes also work with Hotel Molokai and may leave a rental vehicle at the hotel. In addition they will pick you up at the airport if you request. They provide very personalized service and will provide you with as much information and history of the island as you can want.   1/06/03
Kaluapapa mule ride   Kaluapapa does not permit anyone under 16 years of age. However if you ride the mules or obtain your hiking permit from the mule ride office you can contact their office they will try to arrange child care for children. This includes lunch and some type of Hawaiian activity. This was the highlight of our trip. 1/06/03

Kamakou Preserve
The Kamakou Preserve (or what we were able to see of it!) was very pretty but the road (loosely used term) was awful. Driving to the overlook is possible, and offers great valley views, but the road gets much worse with each passing portion of road. Although a 4 wheel drive vehicle is always noted as being necessary here, even a 4 wheel drive vehicle is not often enough, especially if it has been raining. The road is one vehicle wide with pull offs positioned so vehicles can pass. This should not be attempted by anyone with a bad back, the road is really that bad.
