Things To Do/General Tips

Back to index Back to Top
Date
Na Pali Coast Boat Tours - These are no longer allowed to depart from Hanalei and the North Shore (Due to New State of Hawaii regulations). Boat tours to Na Pali coast are now operating from Port Allen (Hanapepe Bay). Add an hour to your travel if you are staying in Princeville. The boat tours need a lot more travel time from the south coast to the Na Pali Coast so be prepared with enough sunscreen et al 9/28/99
Na Pali cruise Morning cruise advantage: Water is calmer in the morning, chances are better to see dolphins, turtles etc.  9/28/99
Sunrise - Princeville - A good place to watch the sunrise is the bluff at the end of Edwards Road (next to Alii Kai and Cliffs Club)  9/28/99
Sunsets - Princeville - For a spectacular view of sunset go to the Princeville hotel. Stay at the bluff next to the parking lot...it's more peaceful than viewing it from the hotel balcony.  9/28/99
Sunsets - Princeville - There is a very nice calm beach next to the Princeville Hotel. Scenic view of Halalei bay and Bali Hai from there. This is another great place to watch the sunset. Park your car in the public lot. The path to the beach is across the parking lot next to the hotel. Hideaways Beach in the front of the hotel. 9/28/99
Activities - Princeville - The Princeville Hotel has a lot of activities that are open to the public. You can get a list at their registration desk. e.g. Hula at sunset, buy a drink at the library and enjoy the show. They even have recent movies shown every night - not sure if this is for hotel guests only.  9/28/99
Food - Fish - Try the different kinds of fresh local fish, the variety is just not available in the mainland. We like Ono the best...firm, easy to grill, delicious. In Kapaa Kauai, Safeway is a good place to buy fish (was good also on Maui): fresh everyday, very friendly seafood counter staff offering good advice on fish selection.  9/28/99
Groceries! - Foodland in Princeville marks down meat prices every morning. We picked up some great marinated pork chops at 50% off. In late afternoons bakery goods are marked down to 1/3 the cost. 9/28/99
Farmer's Markets - There is a farmer's market almost everyday in different parts of the island. Look in the local newspaper or ask any of the activities desks. Great place to buy/try local fruits and veggi. Farmer's market at Halalei (Tues 2pm) is not in the center of town, keep driving pass the town until you see it on the left. To get a parking space and for best selections arrive early! 9/28/99
Grocery discount cards - You can get a temporary Foodland card at the registers. If you forget to bring your Safeway card - just give the register clerk your home phone number.  9/28/99
Speed Traps/Radar - There may only be 1 main road around the island (56/50) but I've seen a lot of speed traps (e.g. Hanapepe). Remember you are relaxing on vacation!!! ;-)  4/30/99

More info - The tour books and magazines have lots of information on Beaches and Snorkeling including great maps and reviews. See 101 Things to Do , Beach and Activity Guide, Snorkel Bob's, etc on the General Tips page for links. 9/10/00
Kauai - Polihale Beach - You drive a very rough "Sugar Cane" road to Polihale Beach. It is just past the Pacific Missile Range base. Beautiful beach with the Napali cliffs at the end. Strong riptides too! 5/30/99
Kauai - Barking Sands - You enter at the gate of the Pacific Missile Range. They want to see your drivers license, car rental agreement and to sign in but don't be intimidated they were very nice and friendly. The gate is open until 6:00pm but they said you could stay as long as you want just no pictures of the facility and no wandering around. We walked down to the end of the beach and there was a jeep with MP's just over the rise...but still a beautiful beach with stong riptides. They give you directions to Barking Sands and/or to the Major's Beach. I understand that Barking Sands Beach is not always open.  5/30/99
Princeville Hotel - There is a very nice calm beach next to the Princeville Hotel. Scenic view of Halalei bay and Bali Hai from there. This is another great place to watch the sunset. Park your car in the public lot. The path to the beach is across the parking lot next to the hotel. Hideaways Beach in the front of the hotel. 9/28/99
Snorkeling - North Shore - Ke'e Beach is at the end of the road (56). Nice sand lagoon protected by a coral reef.  9/28/99
Snorkeling - North Shore - Tunnels Beach at Haena.  9/28/99
Snorkeling - North Shore - July is an ideal time to "snork" on the north shore of The Islands, as the winter swells are not present.
The Shearwater, and everyplace else in Princeville, is on a high bluff overlooking the ocean. There are a couple of foot trails down to some small beaches below, but I've not tried snorkeling there, so I don't know how good they are.
I do most of my snorkeling at Tunnels beach - look for a bunch of cars parked along the road west of Hanalei Colony Resort, just past the Boy Scout Camp, then park and walk to the beach. If you come to a big gaping Dry Cave on the left, you've gone too far. The snorkeling at Tunnels is nice in that the coral is very near the shoreline so you don't have to go in very far to start viewing the fish. It also is an extremely beautiful area, so you'll enjoy taking in the sights from the beach as well.
9/28/99
Snorkeling - East Shore - Lydgate Park near Wailua. Nice protected beach. 9/28/99
Snorkeling - South Shore - Poipu Beach Park across from Brennecke's Restaurant 9/28/99
